A Much-Delayed Read (A Book Review)

I don’t remember the exact circumstances, but about 15 years ago, I found myself reading Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede to a young person.

It the first of The Enchanted Chronicles series where we are introduced to Princese Cimorene, a stubborn tomboy who runs away from home and from the prince who has been chosen as her husband. And she runs to her new position as a dragon’s princess. Funny, fast-paced and utterly charming, it’s must-read even for those of us who keep moving fantasy titles down our lists.

So I was in the middle of the read-aloud, and what happened then happens all the time – the best compliment a reader can pay to an author. The kid couldn’t wait to know the rest of the story and needed know it faster than the amount of time I had to read aloud. She absconded with the book, proclaimed it wonderful and went on to the next in the four-book series.

What did I do? Finish the book? See how Cimorene, who was on the verge of solving her plight, made out? Of course not. I went about my daily business and decided to finish the book when I had a moment to breathe. I have breathed since then. I have also read many, many other books. For some reason, though, I didn’t pick Dealing with Dragons back up until this week.

Now, I’ve thought about Cimorene from time to time – actually often over these years – both as an author (how did Patricia Wrede get her out of this?) and as a reader (how did Cimorene get out of this?) And now, as an author, I tip my hat to Patricia Wrede, and as a reader, I'm ready for Book 2.

Fantasy Lover
I'm a reader who regularly moves fantasy novels UP my tbr list, so this review caught my eye! I'm delighted to know that "Wrede" is not a nom de plume. I wonder how I missed this author while I was growing up!

Re: Fantasy Lover
So many books, so little time. I hope you enjoy it if you do happen to pick it up.

Totally understand the delay. I barely had time to even write the thing. And tell #4, it's hard NOT to like this book.
